The vision for an International Appalachian Trail first occurred to Dick Anderson in October 1993––Thinking Beyond Borders. Now the IAT spans three continents with 5,000 miles of trail on the ground. Walter Anderson became the Chief Geologist of the IAT in 2004 and has advocated tirelessly for Earth history as the foundation for the trail––our geologic heritage.

In honor of Dick and Walter, we are raising funds in 2025 for the IAT Annual Appeal to support a foundational project to tell the stories of the IAT. We are guided by a retired National Park Service planner to develop the strategies to bring the IAT to a much wider audience.

Thank you so much for your support!
